Bairnswear 182: Vintage knitting pattern for ladies socks, 9 designs in all. Tennis with blackberry stitich, or fair isle tops. For rambling in plain rib or different fair isle top, for golf with decorative tops and surface design and a pair for badmington with two differnt top designs, all these knitted in vintage 3ply, which will be similar to modern 4ply, the last pair is for skating and is made in vintage 4ply trimmed with angora, try tenison square to see if modern double knitting would work. Bestway K126: vintage knitting booklet from 1940's for sock patterns for all the family. This is a fabulous peice of social history! This little book has patterns for  socks and stocking for the tiniest baby to grandma!  Girls ankle socks, boys school socks with school colours in tops, Mens socks in rib, with heels turned or no heel (spiral) plain stocking stitch, fancy tops, mens tennis socks, mens football socks, great fair isle socks, special men's socks for tropical climes! several different patterns for bed socks and a even a pattern for long socks to wear after an operation! Ladies stocking, girls stockings in rib, mountineering socks and stockings, sea-boot stockings, wader stockings for the fishemen, ladies walking socks, tennis socks and footlets. The cover is creased, but the book is clean and a great source of inspiration. A lot of the patterns have instructions for both 2 and 4 needles. 24 pages.1940's Don't forget to work a tenison square and remember that vintage 2ply is similar to modern 3ply and vintage 3ply is similar to modern 4ply and vintage 4ply could possibly be modern double knitting - although for this ply it is not a golden rule, so essential you try a tension square in both modern 4ply and double knitting to assess the one nearest to the original used. You can always change needle size to help get the correct size.

Bestway 1246: Fabulous men's slipper pattern from the 1940's, although ready made soles are used, they can be home made from felt or croched or knitted or even cork can be used, or  ready made insoles. I do believe Coats, see links pages, still do them. Homecraft 333: vintage pattern for slippers for children. Bedroom slippers in crochet for 3-4 years, sole 6" long, knitted bootee 3-4 years ole 6" long soles made from flannel or felt and knitted 'wellie' sock for 6-8 yers old. Pattern had been folded so has creases acrros and down centre, but is sound and clean - probably 1940's.

Lycardet187: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern for stockings in three different designs, knitted on 4 needles for that professiona look, as size 15 needles are used it would be a fine rayon or cotton yarn that was used, no measurements given, work your own tension square and see how many stitches are required to work you measurements and adjust pattern accordingly, you can try size 2mm or 14 imperial needles in a fine rayon yarn and see how the sizing works out no date probably 1940's again.

*M&C 282:  Vintage knitting pattern for aran SOCKS, mittens, hat and scarf from 1969. to fit foot length 9.5" but this can be altered quite easily. The stockings take 4 2oz balls which is about 250g. The whole set takes 10 x 2oz balls  about 600g of aran wool. Pattern has a crease to the centre, but is in good condition otherwise. See ARAN pages for more aran knitting.

Maygroves 237: Here we have another vintage knitting pattern for ladies stockings, knitted on two needles in hoisery yarn, a silky rayon yarn on size 13 imperial needles (2.75mm) There are two different patterns, no sizes given, easy to knit to size using pair of socks, lengthen  or shorten as required. As these yarns are no longer made it is a case of trial and error to find one that works, but there are many cotton or synthetic yarns similar to choose from, just make sure it is fine, look at the crochet threads and work samples to see how they streatch and feel when knitted up. I have a very small sample of this thread in my collection which looks like a 20 cotton or 3ply yarn.

Knitted in a form of 4ply with a tension of 9.5 stitches to the 1" on size 13 needles (2.25mm) although knitted on two needles it is suggested that they had points at both ends. Robin 511:Vintage knitting pattern for children's socks from 3 months to 5 years. Knitted in size 13 needles o was probably similar to modern 3ply, could use a cotton for these as I did in the early 1960's for my daughters. Robin Perle wasa shiny synthetic yarn similar to rayon or shiny cotton. If you use cotton try a lager size needle. Work a tension square any way to make sure the needle size is sutable for the size you wish to knit.It referes to hanks, in this case the hanks were 1oz or approx 29g. Weldons 322: Vintage CROCHET patten for slippers for men and ladies. Worked in in double strands of vintage 3ply, nearer modern double knitting, work tension square to make sure. You can create your own soles by drawing round you foot and making a sole peice from leather, felt or other thick fabric. You can alsways knit or crichet a sole shaped peice. It is still postible to obtain soles to sew on from craft shops, when i find a supply I will add details. The supplier I had no longer keeps them.1930's

Weldons 537: Vintage CROCHET patten for sandals. Fabulous shoes made for the summer, it suggests using thick insoles as a sole,which is easily replaceable as it wears.  There are instuctions for making the wedge from cork, cardboard! or wood. The benifit from these shoes are that they will fit as you make the to match your own foot and arch shape 1930/40's. My mother made a pair for herself one summer in 1940 out of fine string and cork inner soles, a bit of glue and a lot of luck - they lasted the summer and she replaced the soles the following year.
