This little book has patterns for socks and stocking for the tiniest baby to grandma! Girls ankle socks, boys school socks with school colours in tops, Mens socks in rib, with heels turned or no heel (spiral) plain stocking stitch, fancy tops, mens tennis socks, mens football socks, great fair isle socks, special men's socks for tropical climes! several different patterns for bed socks and a even a pattern for long socks to wear after an operation! Ladies stocking, girls stockings in rib, mountineering socks and stockings, sea-boot stockings, wader stockings for the fishemen, ladies walking socks, tennis socks and footlets. The cover is creased, but the book is clean and a great source of inspiration. A lot of the patterns have instructions for both 2 and 4 needles. 24 pages.1940's Don't forget to work a tenison square and remember that vintage 2ply is similar to modern 3ply and vintage 3ply is similar to modern 4ply and vintage 4ply could possibly be modern double knitting - although for this ply it is not a golden rule, so essential you try a tension square in both modern 4ply and double knitting to assess the one nearest to the original used. You can always change needle size to help get the correct size.

*M&C 282: Vintage knitting pattern for aran SOCKS, mittens, hat and scarf from 1969. to fit foot length 9.5" but this can be altered quite easily. The stockings take 4 2oz balls which is about 250g. The whole set takes 10 x 2oz balls about 600g of aran wool. Pattern has a crease to the centre, but is in good condition otherwise. See ARAN pages for more aran knitting.

Maygroves 237: Here we have another vintage knitting pattern for ladies stockings, knitted on two needles in hoisery yarn, a silky rayon yarn on size 13 imperial needles (2.75mm) There are two different patterns, no sizes given, easy to knit to size using pair of socks, lengthen or shorten as required. As these yarns are no longer made it is a case of trial and error to find one that works, but there are many cotton or synthetic yarns similar to choose from, just make sure it is fine, look at the crochet threads and work samples to see how they streatch and feel when knitted up. I have a very small sample of this thread in my collection which looks like a 20 cotton or 3ply yarn.

Robin Perle wasa shiny synthetic yarn similar to rayon or shiny cotton. If you use cotton try a lager size needle. Weldons 537: Vintage CROCHET patten for sandals. Fabulous shoes made for the summer, it suggests using thick insoles as a sole,which is easily replaceable as it wears. There are instuctions for making the wedge from cork, cardboard! or wood. The benifit from these shoes are that they will fit as you make the to match your own foot and arch shape 1930/40's. My mother made a pair for herself one summer in 1940 out of fine string and cork inner soles, a bit of glue and a lot of luck - they lasted the summer and she replaced the soles the following year.
