WHEN VINTAGE 3PLY IS  STATED TRY USING MODERN 4PLY, ALWAYS WORK TENSION SQUARE

vintage fair isle childs cardigan knitting pattern 1930

*Angora 63: Beautiful vintage knitting pattern for girls fair isle cardigan in false fair isle. Late 1930s. In this pattern the slipped stitch creates the fair isle look, easy pattern. Worked in angora, but can easily be replaced by modern 4ply, work a tension square to see if need to change needles to get the correct tension with modern wool. If using vintage angora, still work tension square as needles do differ. The tension is 7 stitches to the inch and 12 rows to the inch on size 7 needes (4.50mm). To fit  age nine to twelve chest 27-28 inch. Fabulous pattern from this era.

vintage boys fair isle jumper 1930s

*Bairnswear 97: Great vintage fair isle knitting pattern for jumper for child aged 2-3 years from the late 1930s. This pattern contains three other jumper and trouser patterns for little boys, but jumpers can be made to suit girls or boys. Worked in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square and change needles if needed. There is a greater range of colour in 4ply and the yarn is nearer the original used.  This jumper has shoulder buttons for easy dressing. To fit 22" chest. If you wanted to make a smaller size then use modern 3ply, larger use modern double knitting.

vintagegirls sweater beret cardigan set 1920s

*TPG 46: Fabulous fair isle knitting pattern from the 1920s to fit child 4-6 (27 inch chest). This one is for a cardigan, jumper with collar, beret, scarf and gloves.  Colours suggested in pattern are fawn ground (as was common at this time) yellow, moorit, emereld, blue, light yellow, crimson, white and scarlet. There are small charts to show the patterning. Knitted on 4 needles (or circular if you prefer) I personally find 4 needles easier, but them I am in  my 60s and was taught to knit on 4 needles in 1954! I love this pattern and think it worth the effort to give it a try - the beret alone is stunning when made up. Vintage 3ply was used so try modern 4ply ( no tension is given)

vintage childs fair isle beret jumper set 1920s

TPG 47: Great fair isle pattern from the 1920's for childs beret, scarf, jumper, and breeches (trousers) to fit 2-4 year old. This one is worked in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply for size stated, no chest size for this one, but there is a tension of 6 stitches to an inch on size 9 imperial needles (3.75mm) you could use smaller or lager needles for different sizes (dont forget to allow more wool and inches in length for larger sizes) Colours suggested in pattern are again the fawn ground with green, yellow, blue, orange, dark blue, red. This one also is knitted in 4 needles. You can easily use two needles by dividing the stitches between the back and fronts. Using 4 needles or a circular one for the scarf will mean no seam, but can eaily be knitted straight ad then seamed just cast on the same amount of stiches but on two needles instead, the same with the beret and join seam when fininshed. This applies to the above pattern as well.
