Dorette2-8: Great vintage knitting pattern from 1940s wartime pattern to save coupons and use old sweaters to make new! This great patten is in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply. Original shades suggeted were Epsom Green, Azure, Aconite, Bristol Red, although I suspect any colours available would have been used. To fit bust 35 inches, work on size larger needles for a 36 inch, or smaller for 34 inch. If making the larger one allow a bit more wool. Nice easy fair isle this one.

Dorette2-10: How about this for a perky retro hat? This pattern comes from the wartime , early 1940s and is useful as it can be worn as shown or as a long french style cap. worked in vintage 4ply so would work well in modern double knitting. Knitted on four needles ( or circular one) size 8 imperial (4mm), easy to work and quick to knit - great for christmas gift - a student would love this - they are so fashionable at the moment. Colours suggested are navy, red and white, with navy as the ground colour - would look great with red as the ground colour as well.

Emu D358: Lovely vintage knitting pattern for a warm stylish fair isle jumper, just right for th snowy weather this year - right upto the mark fashion! This pattern is from the 1960's and is knitted in Fiord wool, which is no longer available, but was probably in 2oz  (60gm) hanks, but thick double knitting should work, try a tension square 11 stitches and 13 rows to a 2 inch square on size 8 (4mm) The yoke is worked on 4 needles or a circular needle. *Greenock BK7: Pretty vintage knitting pattern for a short sleeved fair isle jumper. This one is so typical of the time, my mother said she made one just like this the month before she joined the WAAF in 1940 - and wore it untill after she had me, which was in 1949! Knitted in vintage 3ply, so  use modern 4ply and work a tension square to make sure you donet needl to change needles to get the correct size. The instructions are for 32 inch bust, if made in thicker wool or on larger needles you could go upto a 34 inch bust, see how many stitches you knit to an inch in the wool chosen and change needles to get the size you want.

*Hayfield 3095: Great vintage knitting pattern, just ready for the coming skiing season. Very pretty, retro cowl neck sweater and hat and mittens, this pattern is from the 1950s, bit of the Audrey Hepburn here, I think! This would make a great project for the coming winter months and can be worn in the January snows. Worked in double knitting so quite a quick knit. With charts and written instructions. Instructions for 32-38 inch bust. Knitted on quite fine needles to give a dense fabric - but you can go up a size to make the knitting easier, just work a tension square first so that you work to the correct size. Colours suggested are white and green, but white and blue or red would look just as great - or even the modern purple! Wow the slopes this winter! Pattern is in very good condition

Housewife 1950-112: Vintage Sleevless Jerkin fair isle knitting pattern from 1950, fabulous design with buttons all down the sides. Seen below worked in navy and white, but any colour combination will look stunning. Worked in vintage 3ply, so modern 4ply should work out very well, do a tension square and change needles if needed. To fit 32-34 inch bust. Use larger needles for a bigger size, but dont forget to allow more wool if you do this, great retro pattern.

*Patons 345L: Stunning ANGORA vintage knitting pattern from late 1940s early 1950s for jumper with blue birds on fair isle at top, in white angora (fuzzy wuzzy rabbit wool - try Orkney  Angora see links page for details) This calls for Beryl which was a fine ply angora similar to modern 3ply. Penelope 1379: Great fair isle knitting pattern from the 1940's knitted in vintage 2ply which was similar to vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in tensins square and a change of needles if needed. To fit 34" bust. To get lagrer size change needles up or use thicker ply wool. Remember if you do this to allow for more wool. Fair Isle was so popular in the war years as wool was scarce and garments could be unpicked and used to create colourful new ones using scraps or using left over balls of baby wool. Pattern is worn as can be seen from the scan, but is sound and clean, smal splits at top and bottom of spine.

Weldons 1509: Great vintage knitting pattern from mid 1950s, this one has a fair isle band at the top to join the two colours. Worked in double knitting, which was quite popular at this time, war over, rationing at an end so thicker wool was available and also the introduction of synthetic fibres in knitting yarn - up to this time only rayon and art silk were available as an alternative to pure wool or natural silk and cotton. Nylon came into its own during the 1950s as a durable, easily washable yarn. This one is a good size 43"-36" bust and 37"-39" bust. Pattern in a good, clean condition apart from small piece missing at top right hand corner and feint crease.
