Argyll 136: Unusual, very elegant vintage knitting pattern for a waistcoat in the long line that is so fashionable now, 1940's pattern in great condition, a small nick at front edge near bottom. Clean and sound.  It says it uses double knitting 3ply, dont be confused this is a type of double knitting, just a little thicker than some of the modern yarns DK yarns, work a tension square to make sure you use the right size needles to get your size. To fit 33"-34" bust.

Bairnswear 309: This is a fabulous vintage pattern, great for skiing or other winter pursuits. Vintage 4ply is used so you will probably find modern double knitting will work just as well, try a tension square first and change needles if necassary. The bobble pattern is quite easy and very effective. 34" bust but if you knit it in double knitting on size 10 and 8 imperial size needles (3.25 and 4mm)it will make up a little larger.As pattern is rather fagile it is offered only as a photocopy and a pdf.This one is probably from the 1930's or early 40's

*Bairnswear 616: Lovely vintage knitting pattern from the 1950's. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square, change needles if needed. Instructions for long or short sleeves. To fit bust 33-34 inches.  Try a six larger needles for little larger, or knit in double knitting on 10s and 8s(3.25mm and 4mm) to get a large size, but allow for more wool if you do this. (at least half as much again) Takes 7oz (so allow around 250g in 4ply) Pattern has a peice missing from top edge, does not interfer with instructions at all, and punch holes at edge, some surface wear.

Bestway 699: Fabulous vintage 1930's knitting pattern for a dress, knitted in vintage 4ply and 2ply alternately on one thick and one thin needle. Needles used size 10 and 5 imperial or 3.25 or 5.50 metric. Bestway 755: Another fabulous vintage knitting pattern for a ladies dress from the late 1930's. Knitted in Bouclet wool on size 10 imperial needles. So could work out to modern 4ply, Bouclet was a fancy yarn with small flat bobbles along its lengeth, you can buy similar today, but watch the ply. Work a tension square and see what needles you might need with the wool you choose. Tension is 7st and 10 rows on size 10 (3.25mm) over stocking stitch. Fabulous detail on back see below. To fit  34" chest, 42" length.

*Bestway 866: NOT FAIR ISLE: Great vintage knitting pattern for a short sleeved jumper in vintage 3ply to fit 33"-35" bust. Try knitting in modern 4ply as vintage 3ply was a bit thicker than modern 3ply. There is a great choice of colours now in 4ply. I have included this pattern in the fair isl section as well as it appears to be fair isle but is in fact flowers embroidered on after completing the jumper - for more fair isle go to the fair isle pages.   1940's

Bestway 873: Vintage tailored jacket with short sleeves worked in double knitting, try tension square to see if you need to change needle size, instructions for short or long sleeves. This pattern uses two strands of vintage 4ply, as double knitting wool was not readily available at this time.It may well be that this thicknes was more of an aran or chunky. As average 4ply in the 1930's and 40's was similar to our double knitting. It is essential that you work a tension square. Tension is 13st to every 3" and 11 rows to every 2" worked on no 5 needles (5.5mm) Pattern in good condition.

Bestway 882: Vintage knitting pattern for easy to knit rib sweater for that sleek retro look. This style was so popular during the late 1930's through the war years and into the 1950's. This is probably from the late 1930's or early 1940's. This one is knitted in SILK. The pattern states a light weight silk that was sold in 2oz hanks and was the same thickness as vintage 3ply (nearer to modern 4ply) there were 218 yards to each 2oz hank. There are instructions for tension square.To fit 34 inch chest when excpanded. Instructions for long or short sleeves.

Bestway886: Great vintage ladies jumper worked in a patchwork design. During the Second World War and through the 1940's and early 1950's wool was rationed and in very short supply so odd bits were used that were either left over or from unravelling old garments. This is why there was such a range of these patterns for all the family and also why boleros, vests or tank tops or waist coats were so popular as the could use these smaller quanitities of wool. This one was knitted in vintage 2ply, so modern 3ply will be better to use as it is similar in thickness. To fit 32"-34" bust, for bigger size this one can be knitted in 4ply or even double knitting, just work a tension square and see how many stitches you need to an inch. 1940's pattern with a very feint crease down centre.

Bestway 894: Vintage knitting pattern for a cardigan with a secret! Great pattern from the late 1930's or early 1940's. This cardigan pattern incorperates a front peice known as a vestee to look like a jumper underneath - so for less money it looks smart. Bestway 908: Isn't this fabulous? War-time pattern for the girls in the W.A.A.F - my mother was a driver in air force during the war and instantly recognised this pattern - every girl knittied in those days, even their stockings and underwear if you wanted to keep warm in chilly billets. This one is to fit a trim 32-34 inch bust. (easy to enlarge, just add a few stitches at each side to make up width - work a tension square first to establish how many stitches you need per inch or knit in a thicker ply)

*Bestway 913: NOT FAIR ISLE: Lovely Vintage knitting pattern for unusual jumper design. This design is actually worked after the jumper has been knitted. Known as darning, this is so simple but effective for those who find fair isle a bit daunting. A thread of colour is just threaded through the stitches in diagonal lines to create this stunning effect. To fit 34"-36" bust, very easy to increase the size of this one by adding a few stitches as the basic pattern is so simple. The buttons at the neck are crocheted, but  ordinary burrons can be used - soon I will have lots of 1940's buttons to choose from. 1940's

Bestway 1035: Lovely vintage pattern for vintage bolero to fit 34" bust, as this is such an easy design  to make larger is not a problem, work a tension square to see how many stitches you knit to the inch in the wool you choose and then just add the amount of stitches you require for the extra inches, remembe that you have added stiches when shaping the fronts and split the amount of stitches between the back and the two fronts. Bestway 1628: Although this is for teenage school girls I have included here as it can be knitted in 4ply or double knitting and made large.  Ideal for the coming Tennis season. The measurements states 28" streaching to 33" bust knitted in 3ply on size 12 (imperial) so if you used 4ply and size 10 would be a couple of inches larger and again in double knitting on needles 8 (imperial) it would be bigger still. This little top is knitted on 4 needles, so you could try knitting it on a circular needle. 1940's
