vintage baby pram blanket knitting pattens

*Bairnswear 183: Beautiful baby pram blanket vintage knitting pattern 1930s. Three lovely, easy to knit designs in vintage 3ply baby wool, so try a tension square in modern 4ply to give a better size. Change needles if needed. There are instructions for the one on the cover which measure 24 x 27 inches, another one with a large square design 26 x 35 inches and the last one is in a two colours check pattern, suggested blue and white, but would just a nice in pink and white or lilac and white etc to match pram or nursery, this one is 24 x 27 inches. Any one of these can be knitted in double knitting for larger sizes but you must remember to have more wool probably double the amounts suggested. I am hopeing to get some pram blankets knitted in ALPACA for the winter, so keep an eye on the baby clothes on the ALPACA ANGELS section - lots more things coming soon!

vintage shawl knitting patterns

Weldons 209: Very pretty vintage baby shawl knitting patterns. There follows a selction of baby shawl knitting patterns from early in the  last century around 1910-1920. They are all knitted in very fine wools and need careful blocking and handling when washing - by hand. It is suggested that a fine startch is used to make it less likely to stretch. There are no tenison guide lines, and no finished sizes. If you work a samlple of the pattern and measure how many stitches you work to the inch in your chosen wool, you will be able to see what size it should be and be able to adjust if needed to keep it square. These designs are beautiful and are well worth a try, perhaps using a less vintage pattern that may you have as a guide. Beacuse of these notes it is suggested that a bit of experience knitting shawls is advisable for the following patterns and a degree of trial and error is involved - but looking at them it will be well worth the effort. I have tried to give as much information as possible regarding these patterns. But rememeber, many a time ladies or nannies of this period used to knit from memory or made them up as they went a long, so it is not that difficult to make changes - be brave, have ago!

Weldons 209-1: Vintage baby shawl knitting pattern. This one is worked from the centre and then the border is worked by picking up stitches round the edges. It is suggested to use 2ply which in the early part of the 20th Century was nearer to modern 3ply - is you can use either as there is no size guide it is knittted on size 10 (3.25mm).

The edging is knitted seperatley and sewn on after completeion, easing the fullnes at the corners - it suggests a little starch to hold it firmer whilst blocking and ironing.

Weldon209-5:Vintage baby shawl knitting pattern. This one is knitted in very fine wool, although the ply is not given it could be lace ply as it only takes 3 (100g)oz and measures 36 inches square. It is knitted in two peices, the centre and the border. If you were to try it in 2ply then allow more wool, preferbly twice the amount and it will probably work out bigger or change the needles, worth a try, very pretty and delicate, keep needle size a little larger than you think this ply would take to keep the light airyness of the delicate shawl.

This one is quite easy compared to some of the others, but still fine and delicate. It has a pretty border that is sewn on after after the centre is finished. It actually says the wool used in the original was a fine wool ans silk - there are wool ans silk yarns about, Sirdar and several other wool manufactures make it but I don't think you can get it in a 3ply any more, but any good quaility 3ply merino or alpaca would work - be careful when blocking that it does not stretch.
